12 YMCA Representatives from Five Countries Connect Mission and Future Cooperation in Prague

Twelve YMCA representatives from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary met in Prague to examine a practical question: how can the YMCA’s mission, Christian identity and values continue to guide its work with young people and communities in a changing European context?

The weekend created space for participants to compare the work of their National Movements, including their current activities, priorities and challenges. By sharing different national perspectives, they identified common concerns, exchanged approaches and explored how the five movements can support and learn from one another.

A central part of the meeting focused on connecting the YMCA’s identity with its everyday work. Participants discussed how its Christian foundations can inform decisions, relationships and programmes, while remaining relevant to the realities facing young people and communities today.

They also considered how the YMCA’s mission and values should guide the implementation of YMCA Vision 2030. The discussion helped connect the movement’s strategic priorities with its underlying purpose, ensuring that future development is not separated from the identity and principles on which the YMCA was built.

Moments of silence and prayer complemented the working sessions, providing space for personal reflection and a deeper consideration of the YMCA’s spiritual foundations.

The meeting also demonstrated that regional cooperation depends on more than formal structures. Building trust and understanding among representatives from neighbouring movements creates a stronger basis for future exchanges, shared learning and joint initiatives.

YMCA Europe participated in the meeting and supported the exchange as part of its role in strengthening connections and cooperation across the region.

The participants intend to build on the relationships established in Prague and continue exploring how their movements can work together while putting the YMCA’s mission and values into practice.
